The Garin Alimi Ambassadors (also referred to as Geri Alimi Ambassadors), a socio-political advocacy group, has urged political parties to field a governorship candidate from the Ilorin Emirate for the 2027 election, arguing that the zone’s demographic weight, economic importance, and the benefits of policy continuity make a compelling case for continued leadership.
Mallam Bolaji Gobir, Convener of the group, made the call while addressing journalists and stakeholders in Ilorin. He emphasized that Kwara Central Senatorial District — home to the state capital and the highest concentration of population — serves as the state’s primary socio-economic hub, giving it a strong democratic claim to sustained governance.
Gobir clarified that the advocacy is not intended to sideline other senatorial districts (Kwara North or South) but to promote stability, mature democratic practice, and the uninterrupted rollout of ongoing development initiatives statewide.
The group highlighted that good governance should prioritize merit, competence, and progress over strict adherence to rotational zoning formulas. It pointed out that the Ilorin Emirate has a proven track record of producing capable, inclusive leaders who can unite and develop the entire state.
“The Ilorin Emirate’s cosmopolitan nature and central position make it a natural bridge for Kwara’s diverse communities and interests,” Gobir added in related statements.
The Garin Alimi Ambassadors announced they would throw their weight behind any political party — regardless of platform — that zones its 2027 governorship ticket to a candidate from Ilorin. At the same time, the group committed to dialogue and engagement with leaders from other zones to foster unity and collective prosperity.
Gobir appealed to political actors at both state and national levels to weigh these arguments carefully in the interest of long-term development and democratic stability in Kwara State.
The statement comes amid early positioning ahead of the 2027 governorship race, as debates over zoning, merit, and continuity intensify across the state.
