Biography

Muhammad Dele Belgore, SAN, is a distinguished Nigerian legal luminary, chartered arbitrator, and politician from a prominent Ilorin legal dynasty. Son of the late Hon. Justice Mahmud Babatunde Belgore (former Chief Judge of the Federal High Court), he has earned widespread respect for his pioneering contributions to Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Nigeria and his consistent advocacy for progressive governance and development in Kwara State.

Known for his integrity, intellectual depth, and commitment to service, Belgore is regarded as one of Kwara’s most eligible statesmen with the potential to drive meaningful transformation. He remains a respected voice in both legal and political circles, often described as a bridge-builder with elite pedigree and broad appeal.

Professional Career

Dele Belgore began his legal career as a Legal Officer at Nigerian Merchant Bank Limited (1985–1986). He later joined the chambers of Chief Rotimi Williams, SAN, in Lagos (1986–1989). In 1989, he co-founded the leading commercial law firm Sofunde, Osakwe, Ogundipe & Belgore, where he continues to practice.

He specializes in commercial law, dispute resolution, financial regulation, and arbitration. In 2001, at the age of 40, he was conferred the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) — one of the youngest at the time. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK) (FCIArb), a Chartered Arbitrator (C.Arb), and former Chairman of the Nigeria Branch of the Institute. He is also a CEDR-accredited mediator.

Belgore is widely credited with advancing the adoption and institutionalization of arbitration and mediation as efficient alternatives to litigation in Nigeria.
